How it Works

It belongs in the class of medicines known as antineoplastics and functions as an antimetabolite.

It acts like purine/pyrimidine, a sequencing precursor for DNA. When the cell tries to incorporate it in the early stages of cell division it is able to stop the cell from dividing.

In the treatment of malignant pleural mesothelioma, the drug is given in combination with an alkylating agent like cisplatin. Those drugs work in conjunction with pemetrexed by cross linking certain DNA

It is used to treat a type of cancer called malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). This cancer affects the inside lining of the chest cavity. Pemetrexed is given with cisplatin, another anti-cancer medicine (chemotherapy).
